Abstract: This article substantiates the etymology of the Byzantine name Turkel, derived from the Old Norse name Þórkell or its Old English Thurkil(l), Norman Torchetil / Turchetil, and Old Russian *Тоуръкелъ derivatives. Accordingly, the bearers of this name could have come from the Scandinavian Peninsula, the British Isles, southern Italy, or Rus’. The first of these, known from seals, was an interpreter, while the second bore two names Theodore and Turkel. It is possible that the interpreter Turkel and Theodore Turkel were the same person, but it is also possible that they were different. It is impossible to determine with certainty whether the interpreter Turkel served in the military or diplomatic fields. Theodore Turkel, known from a votive inscription on a silver ladle, was, judging by the image of the warrior saint Theodore on the ladle, somehow connected with military affairs. It’s noteworthy that both of Turkel Theodor’s patrons, the god Thor and St. Theodore, were serpent-fighters. Moreover, the images of predators tormenting people, and most importantly, the “serpent-dragon” swallowing a helmeted man, on the ladle that belonged to Theodore Turkel, depict the enemies from whom the ace Thor and saint warrior Theodore defended mankind.
