Abstract: What were paschal annals, a kind of texts well-known for a long time but yet not easy for understanding? When and why did they appear? What was they function? What can their codicological context tell us about those texts? How did they evolution? Can one define their genre? Paschal annals are a historiographical construction of the 19th century which later was voluntary integrated into a scheme of development of medieval annalistic writing. However, manuscript material shows that, up to the 10th century, notes in Easter tables were connected not with historical writing but with computus. They were a tool of formation and visualization of the perception of linear Christian time. After the year 1000, paschal annals gradually change they nature: they distance themselves from computus and become a part of chronicle writing in a strict sense. This follows not only from the content of the historical notes, but also from the types of Easter tables used for the annals as well as from their new codicological context.

Key words: annals, Easter tables, manuscripts, codicology, historical culture, medieval history writing
