Abstract: AM 105 fol and AM 107 fol are typical examples of the mid-life handwriting of the Icelandic scribe Jón Erlendsson, displaying all the distinctive characteristics of his fraktur script. We identified Jón’s most frequent abbreviations and, using the AQUAD 7, analyzed his abbreviations of the phrase hét maðr and the words dóttir, móðir, sonr, and systir. This revealed a high degree of internal variability in the abbreviations of the same word or phrase. These abbreviations may include only an initial, an initial with a dot, an initial under a title, an initial with a raised final letter, or an initial with the last two letters of the final letter raised, and all of these variations are often found within a single folio. A direct correlation between the increase in the number of abbreviations and increasing hand fatigue was not observed. The principle of saving paper is not systematically maintained in manuscripts written by Jón, i. e. the number of abbreviations does not depend on the beginning / end of the folio and its front / back side..
Key words: AM 105 fol, AM 107 fol, Jón Erlendsson (1600/10–1672), paleography, fraktur variant, abbreviation practices, boundary-skeletal image models, grapheme analysis
