Abstract: The paper is dedicated to a palaeographical study of the documents of the Investigation File on the death of Tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich on the 15th of May, 1591, in Uglich. The main hands of the File, as well as the signatures of the participants of the trial are studied. The author has elaborated and approbates new methods of identification of late 16th-century Cyrillic business cursive hands. The palaeographical analysis helps to clarify the course of the trial and the investigation (undertaken by the commission of Prince Vasily Shuysky) as well as to better understand some aspects of the court practice in the late 16-century Russian State and to obtain new data for the reconstruction of the original makeup of the File and the process of its composition.
